Oh, Horrors!

My buddy Steve Sullivan (Stephen D. Sullivan) has an AWESOME NEW BOOK OUT (Dr. Cushing’s Chamber of Horrors) and I read it and LOVED IT. And Amazon won’t let me post a review because they say I am biased and too-connected. Okay, they might be right, but I should still be allowed to post a review … after all, I bought Steve’s book and read it. The bias comes from me and Steve being old friends. And we’ve worked on lots of projects together … and Amazon noticed, apparently. SIGH.

Can a biased soul post an unbiased review? Certainly. Here it goes. I’ve read A LOT of Steve’s books and short stories through the years (decades?), and honestly this is one of my favorites. Seriously. And I’m not a horror fan. Mysteries? Thrillers? Yeah. Horror …. not usually. Except for this book, which is also a mystery and a thriller and has just the right amount of squish factor.

The main characters — Opal and Topaz Cushing are delightful and propel the action. Twins, but with a clever amount of differences and similarities, they interact with the mix of villains and unfortunate souls who get caught up in the action that springs from the collection of oddities in the Chamber of Horrors.

Now, I have to be careful not to give anything away. Other than that there is a werewolf in it–though you can tell that by the cover.

What I really liked about this book was that nothing was wasted. All the little bits that Steve sprinkled in the Chamber were woven into the fabric of the plot. I could tell he put a lot of research into the project.

It’s a BIG book, one of those hefty things to take up space on a shelf (or in your e-reader). And because he pulls you through it, the story reads quickly. When I finished, I asked him where’s the next one.

SERIOUSLY, STEVE … WHERE IS THE NEXT BOOK because I want to read more of these characters’ adventures?

I give the book FIVE STARS. Go out (or stay in) and buy it.
