DOGS IN COMMON

I met Yvonne Navarro in 2006 at the World Horror Convention in Chicago. I was there with my buddy Gene Wolfe, sat on a panel with him, and I had the pleasure of hanging out with Neil Gaiman … who was a buddy of Gene’s.

A delight of the weekend … I got to chat with the lovely and talented Yvonne Navarro.

I bought one of her books: That’s Not My Name, great, eerie story. She signed it for me, and I have it sitting on my special shelf with some other autographed books. Yvonne and I were born the same year, lived in Illinois for a while, and have dogs in common. But not the same kind of dogs. Yvonne has these gorgeous Great Danes that she is kind enough to share via Facebook posts. On days I visit Facebook, I look for her dog pics. My three dogs are rescues, scratch-n-dents if you will. I love them endlessly. As I write this, my bossy terrier is splashing in the kiddie pool, a one-eyed pug is on my lap, and the Labrador is stretched out across my feet.

Yvonne’s Great Danes wouldn’t fit in the kiddie pool … well, they could get their front feet inside. Sometimes I could see myself having a BIG dog like that, as Yvonne has made me consider that notion.

Dogs in common.

I think dogs are great for writers, gets us away from the keyboard. Gets me to toss tennis balls until it feels like my arm is going to fall off.

Anyway, back to Yvonne. She has a marvelous story in Turning the Tied, the anthology produced by the IAMTW (International Association of Media Tie-In Writers) to benefit World Literacy. Her story is about Frida Kahlo, delicately written, like butter melting off the page.

Yvonne is one of twenty-one authors from that anthology who will be speaking via zoom during a three-night event: June 29, 30, and July 1, hosted by the University Bookstore. It starts each night at 5 p.m. Central. HERE IS THE LINK to sign up for a spot at the event. Yvonne will be on the 29th. The full list of authors and their days is on the link.

Hope to see and hear you there.
